What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

The brain is a delicate organ encased in a hard skull. When there is trauma, the brain may react in different ways. A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is an injury that affects how the brain functions, and is a leading cause of death and disability across the United States. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that around 176 Americans die of a traumatic brain injury each day. TBIs in children can affect brain development for the rest of their lives. According to the CDC, traumatic brain injuries can be caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head trauma.

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

Traumatic brain injuries are classified into three categories.

  • A mild TBI. Mild traumatic brain injuries, also known as concussions, occur when the brain is violently shaken within the skull. Statistically, three out of every four TBIs are concussions. While it is comparatively less severe, don’t let the name fool you. Mild traumatic brain injuries are still incredibly serious and warrant immediate medical attention. Concussions can still cause alterations in consciousness, including feeling “dazed” or a loss of consciousness for less than thirty minutes. People may experience confusion, difficulties with attention, and struggle with memory following a mild TBI, but it should resolve within days.
  • A moderate TBI. A moderate TBI involves a loss of consciousness for over 30 minutes but less than one day. With this level of brain injury, confusion, difficulties with attention, and problems with memory may persist for a longer period, and may even have a permanent effect on brain functioning.
  • A severe TBI. Severe TBIs involve a period of unconsciousness for more than 24 hours. These injuries are usually visible as changes to the brain on a CT or MRI. These injuries can be fatal, and, when survived, may result in permanent changes in cognition, behavior, and physical functioning.

Common Causes of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries can occur in a wide variety of circumstances, from contact sport injuries to gunshot wounds. Many brain injuries occur after catastrophic accidents. Most commonly, those include:

  • Slipping, tripping, or falling
  • Car, truck, or motorcycle accidents
  • Train, bus, or plane accidents
  • Pedestrian, scooter, or bicycle accidents
  • Violence
  • Suicide attempts
  • Workplace accidents, such as construction site accidents
  • Sports injuries
